Join us for an afternoon of learning and repairing while we reduce waste and promote sustainability in our community. Bring your broken household items such as small appliances, wooden furniture, bicycles, clothes, and more. Our team of skilled Fixers will teach you how repair them for free!
The first Repair Café opened in 2009 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Since then, the Repair Café Foundation launched and took the first steps in creating a movement that strives to preserve repair skills in society, foster a mentality around creating less waste and promote more repairable products.
Currently there are over 2,200 Repair Cafés located worldwide and Maine’s Center for Sustainability will house the newest addition. Our Repair Café will focus on helping people learn the skills to repair instead of replacing broken or damaged items. Most items these days are manufactured with built in obsolescence that forces people to replace them in a fairly short period of time. Without the ability or knowledge to repair an item, most people think the only option is to throw it away and purchase a new one.
Our vision takes items destined for the landfill, extends their usable life, and creates the opportunity for strangers to connect over the teaching of new skills. We envision a vibrant space that promotes community engagement and brings together those with a willingness to learn how to repair their items with expert volunteers excited to teach someone new skills.
Think cozy coffee shop meets your dad’s workshop, meets your grandma’s knitting circle: a bright, bustling and inviting setting that has every tool for the job accessible to you and your expert volunteer. Yarn, nails, sewing machines, saws and hammers, etc. await those excited to take a stand against wasteful manufacturing practices.
The Repair Café will feature designated workspaces for repairing small appliances, bicycles, textiles, and more. It will also be the home of comfy couches and sitting areas for those wanting to connect with like-minded community members. Need to fix your favorite sweater? Imagine someone guiding you through knitting a patch. Have a broken fan? There’s someone with electrical experience waiting for you at a workbench with all the necessary tools and parts. This is what we imagine the Repair Café can do for the community.
